Alfredo Astiz, June 1999
español   italiano

The following is an email received on June 2, 1999 from Argentina. It describes how Astiz enjoys his time in the town of Lujan, where he has family, walking in the streets, relaxing in a delicatessen place, a country club where he plays golf, etc. [As a legacy of many years of military rule, Argentina's miltary's salaries are extremely high. Also, retired military are entitled to very generous pensions allowing them to maintain an unusually high standard of living -- Ed.]

When human right advocates tried to hand a written request asking the club owners to declare Astiz a persona non grata, they were denied entrance to voice their feelings. [Convicted (and then released) mass murderers are walking free, while the families of the innocent victims are effectively silenced.] The author concludes by asking "Argentine justice, great thank you, isn't it?"
